A charity for the homeless in Ipswich celebrated its 25th anniversary by showcasing its work to the town mayor and members of the public.

The open day event at the Salvation Army’s Fore Street branch was also held to highlight the plight of homeless people in the town. Service manager Sharon Ralph said Friday’s event went “really well” and was supported by the public.

“We were delighted to welcome the mayor and we really appreciated the public support,” she said.

“We wanted to celebrate the fact that we’ve been running the service here in Ipswich for 25 years and to raise awareness about the work that we do.”

Staff, volunteers and clients shared their experiences of the Salvation Army with the visitors to the event, who were treated to tea and cake in celebration of the anniversary.

Ms Ralph said that at any one time, the centre helps 39 clients aged 18 and over with advice and training on employment, benefits, volunteering and life skills “to help them get back on their feet”.
