MOTORISTS will be hoping for a smoother journey today after a six-vehicle crash on the Orwell Bridge led to slow traffic in Ipswich.

Police, paramedics and the fire service were scrambled to the incident, on the eastbound carriageway, at about 9am yesterday.

The carriageway had to be completely closed off to traffic while recovery for the vehicles was arranged and the vehicles were removed from the road.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said nobody suffered serious injuries in the smash and firefighters were not required to cut anyone out of their vehicles.

A two-vehicle collision also happened on the westbound carriageway, just after the Orwell Bridge, at about 9am yesterday, which led to a partial closure of the road.

Both incidents were cleared by about 11am.

There was also slow traffic reported in Ipswich as many motorists drove through the town in order to avoid the incident.

Yesterday’s crash happened just hours after a four vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway of the A14 at Nacton, near the Orwell bridge, on Tuesday afternoon.

One lane was closed while the emergency services cleared the road.
