Cherie Harper will be taking on the Ipswich Hospital Charity Super Hero Zipline today in aid of the Blossom Appeal.
Cherie’s mum Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer in October.
While speaking with nurses at the hospital Cherie happened to find out that about the zip line event and decided to get involved.
“It was just at the right to for it to come up,” said Cherie.
Angela is currently receiving treatment for her breast cancer having already undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
She was pleased to hear that her daughter would be taking part in the event.
“She was a bit shocked when I told her but it’s quite close to her heart.”
Cherie has been surprised by the amount of money friends, family and others have donated, having initially set her goal at £150.
“It’s been really good. I’ve had lots of friends, family and work colleagues donate.
“You don’t think people are going to be as generous as they are.”
So far Cherie has raised £650, more than four times her original target.
Like many of the others taking part in the event this weekend Cherie admits she is a little bit nervous about the jump itself.
“I’m not really a massive fan of heights.”
Many of the fundraisers will be dressed as superheroes as they jump off the 135 ft tall maternity unit to raise money for their chosen area of the hospital.
Although Cherie will not be dressing up for the event her parents have decided to highlight her efforts by bringing a specially printer banner to the event.
Cherie takes on the zip wire this afternoon but the event will continue across the weekend.
The event replaces the annual abseil from the building and was so popular that organisers had to add an extra day so more people could take part.
Over £31,000 has been raised so far by those who are set to take part this weekend.
A spokesperson for the Ipswich Hospital Charity said:“We are all so excited that the zip line has been so well received by the local public having sold out months ago!”
