They started well and on 10 minutes Sullivan went close with a drive from 18 yards. On 17 minutes a fine move ended with Billy Burgess firing over from the edge of the area.
Workington looked dangerous, with Berkeley causing problems but on 20 minutes the Iron took the lead with a Quinton strike from wide on the right that beat the Workington keeper Colin at his near post.
Nicky Morgan in the Braintree goal had to be alert on 35 minutes to tip a fierce free kick over the bar.
Braintree started the second half well on top but failed to take advantage of the chances they created and on the hour they were punished when the referee gave Workington a penalty.
Craig Johnson placed the ball just inside a post for the equaliser.

On 70 minutes Baker put Braintree 2-1 up when he ghosted in at the far post to steer the ball home from a corner.
Braintree now face a less daunting trip to Aldershot in the next round.
