There have been a lot of Royal stories around this week ahead of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The world’s media has been building itself up into a frenzy about the antics of members of Ms Markle’s extended family and who has and hasn’t been invited to today’s nuptials, but I’ve been more interested in another Royal story that’s got rather less attention.

The Duchess of Cambridge is apparently becoming known as Thrifty Kate because of her penchant for dressing her three children in hand-me-downs. She has, it’s said, recycled Prince George’s clothes for Princess Charlotte and now the youngest member of the family, Prince Louis, has already been spotted in outfits previously worn by his siblings.

George, we are informed, has even donned a couple of outfits handed down from Prince William, including a blue romper suit he wore at the Trooping of the Colour ceremony in 2015, 31 years after his father wore it at the same event.

And would you believe it, Kate has used the same pram - a £1,600 Silver Cross model - for all three of her children.

I have to say, I’d be amazed if she hadn’t. Getting a new pram for each child, at a cost of several thousand pounds, would be profligacy of the highest order, even if you are a super-rich Royal. The same could be said about a £416 coat Kate has been spotted wearing - and brace yourselves for this - more than once. It seems they’re really slumming it at Kensington Palace now.

I’m quite prepared to believe Kate has a penchant for thriftiness but I wonder if her habit of using hand-me-downs for her children has more to do with family tradition and continuity, something, it could be argued, that is at the heart of monarchy. If she starts charity store shopping, then I’ll be convinced.

n Thanks to reader John Parson for sharing his thrifty tips. John says: “Switching bank accounts has been productive for us, having netted £1,750 in incentive payments since we began in 2012. Unfortunately there are not so many offers around now but still worth investigating. Beware to satisfy the conditions.”
