A Suffolk motorist who panicked and left his injured step-brother at the scene of an accident has been jailed for eight months.

Following the crash in High Street, Kessingland, James Reilly walked away from the overturned car he had been driving, leaving his injured step-brother, who suffered bruising to his face and muscle damage, and another passenger, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Reilly, 30, of London Road South, Lowestoft admitted failing to stop after an accident, failing to provide a breath specimen, criminal damage and breach of a suspended prison sentence.

In addition to being jailed, he was also banned from driving for 16 months.

Russell Butcher, prosecuting, said that on September 23 last year Reilly was driving his step-brother's Peugeot 107 at 8.45pm and had overturned the vehicle after clipping a kerb, hitting a road sign and hitting a shed.

Reilly had walked off, leaving his injured step-brother and another passenger at the scene and, when he was stopped by police, he refused to provide a breath specimen and spat on the seat of a police car.

Lori Tucker, mitigating, said Reilly had panicked after the accident and was ashamed of the way he had behaved.
