FORMER Ipswich triathlete Julia Shaw set a new ladies’ 100 mile competition record when she won the national championship promoted by the East District CA on the A11 near Attleborough.

Her time of 3:45:22 gave her a 18:50 margin over second placed Mathilde Matthysse (Ferryhill Whs, 4:4:12). Speaking afterwards Shaw, who now lives in Hampshire, said she “went a bit over the top” in the early stages and suffered on the last lap. Nevertheless her time knocks 6:50 off the previous record which she set in 2009.

Red Lodge man Mark Arnold (3:42:10) led his Pedal Revolution.co.uk team mates Andy Bason (3:39:32) and puncture victim Nik Bowdler (3:56:33) to the team championship.

The event was dominated by the wind. It was blowing roughly parallel with the course – a 13 mile stretch of the A11, 26 miles to a “circuit” repeated nearly four times.

Men’s champion was Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear/Quickvit). His 3:23:04 was just 19 second slower than Competition Record and 15:50 – that’s nearly sixteen minutes – ahead of second placed Julian Jenkinson.

The Chelmer cycling club had a successful day with the award for riders aged over 80 going to Peter Horsnell who finished in 5:12:30, while John Golder (4:13:12) won the 55-59 age group and Ann Shuttleworth took 15th place among the women with 4:37:10.

East District CA Champions were Andy Bason (Pedal Revolution, 3:39:32) and Catherine Essex (King’s Lynn CC, 4:34:30). Bason was also the first winner for 61 years of a handsome trophy that was originally won outright by F Steed of Colchester Rovers in the 1939 Norwich 100. His son has re-presented it to be awarded to the fastest East District rider in the National Championship 100.

JAMES Eman (Anglia Velo) made it four wins in a row when he won the Ipswich Bicycle Club 10 at Sudbourne on a windy, baking, Saturday afternoon. His time was 22:29, 27 seconds ahead of Paul Smith, with Owen Bannister (Stowmarket & District) in third place with 23:39.

James Goward (Farnham RC) won the Southend Wheelers 50 in 1:56:40, ahead of Nick Hastler(Essex Roads, 1:57:13) and Andrew Leggett (Stowmarket & District, 1:57:13). Gary Wood of the Maldon & District put in an outstanding ride to take 7th place in 2:1:29.

Martin Hunter (Colchester Rovers) extended his lead in the Lotus Cars League with another win on the Hethel circuit. Approching the finish Mark Westrup (VC Baracchi) led out clubmate Liam Gentry, but Hunter’s legs lasted longer and he came past to take the win.

However four days later Hunter was involved in a crash affecting several riders a quarter of a mile before the finish of the VC Norwich road race. The race was won by the promoting club’s Mike Auger. VCN’s Simon Asher attacked right from the start. He was joined by Auger, Phil Hetzel (Ipswich BC) and a Cambridge CC rider, a group who worked well together, maintaining a lead of about one minute for the rest of the race. Auger made his move on the final climb and took the win ahead of Asher and Hetzel.

The Garboldisham Grovels Audax rides quite failed to live up to their name. Riders in the 200 km event were blown from the Suffolk border to the Norfolk coast at Burnham Deepdale, They expected to face a tough return. However, the wind changed direction and provided a glorious return ride all the way to the finish of the Diss CTC promoted event.
