KEEP Lowestoft in Suffolk - that was the message from protestors who gathered today to speak out against plans to merge the town into a Norfolk unitary authority.

About 200 people joined the protest, which was led by town mayor Frank Mortimer and Waveney District Council leader Mark Bee, against the Boundary Committee's proposals to include Lowestoft in a Norfolk unitary council.

The group marched to the town hall, where a Suffolk flag was raised by the mayor.

Waveney District Council last week announced that it will be recommending that Lowestoft becomes part of an East Suffolk unitary authority.

The flag will stay flying above the town hall until the Boundary Committee's public consultation on the proposals ends on September 26.
