LABOUR won the Glasgow North East by-election which had been caused by the resignation of former Commons Speaker Michael Marti.
As none of three main parties contested the seat in 2005 - by convention, the Speaker does not face a serious challenge from the three main parties - no calculations are available to assess the swing.
But given that Labour's Willie Bain was elected yesterday with a 59.3% vote, Glasgow North East will be listed now as one of the party's safest seats.
The British National party finished fourth, narrowly losing its deposit, while the Liberal Democrat was sixth with just 474 votes - 2.3% of the vote - which was its worst by-election performance in the modern era.
