FIREFIGHTERS are continuing to tackle a large timber fire in Essex today which left parts of Chelmsford covered by clouds of smoke.
Fire crews were called to a timber yard in Roxwell Road, between Writtle and Roxwell, at about 12.20am today, where a fire involving 5,000 cubic metres of timber had broken out.
Dozens of firefighters have tackled the blaze which is thought to have been started deliberately.
The fire has left Roxwell Road closed to traffic and firefighters are still on the scene.
As part of the operation the urban search and rescue team is using a high volume pump, which shifts 7,000 litres of water a minute. It is the first time this piece of equipment has been used in Essex.
