SUFFOLK Police's message this Christmas is don't put yourself or others at risk by drink or drug driving.

Officers will be stepping up roadside checks over the next month as part of their Christmas Drink and Drug Drive campaign, supported by Suffolk Roadsafe, which was officially launched today.

The Department for Transport's £1.6million THINK! campaign was also launched today and is supported by Coca-Coal, meaning designated drivers will receive free soft drinks at thousands of pubs across the country.

In December 2007, 3,069 people across Suffolk were stopped and breathalysed as part of a similar enforcement campaign. In all, 94 were found to be over the legal limit of 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Statistics also show that in 2007, more than 15 per cent of fatal road collisions in Suffolk were due to drink and drug driving.
