LOCOMOTIVE enthusiasts have come up with an unusual way to raise funds for a railway restoration project.

The Leiston Works Railway (LWR) group hopes to fully restore a stretch of track running behind the Engineers Arms pub to the entrance of the Master Lord Industrial Estate. To help raise money for the project people are invited to sponsor a sleeper for 35.

The track was originally used by Suffolk Punch horses hauling coal and iron from the town’s main railway station to the Garrett Works. This was later taken over by steam shunting engine Sirapite and the aim is to get the locomotive running up and down the tracks once again. Colin Fisher, the LWR’s publicity officer, said: “People could purchase a sleeper in memory of a loved one - maybe they worked at Richard Garrett Engineering? Or as a gift for someone who has a particular interest in railways.”
