Suffolk police have confirmed that what are thought to be human remains have been found at the scene of a portable building fire.
Officers were called to the remains of the building on land adjoining Leiston Football Club in Victory Road at 3.37pm on Wednesday,February 6.
Police have confirmed the fire took place on Tuesday, February 5, at around 3.30am.
A Home Office post mortem examination of the body is due to take place tomorrow, Friday, February 7.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said: “A police scene remains in place in Victory Road while investigations into the circumstances of what has happened continue.”
A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue said: “A Suffolk fire officer was called to the scene yesterday afternoon (February 6) at 16:12 to assist Police with their investigation.
“No appliances were required. We are continuing to support the police with their enquiry.”
A man who answered the phone at Leiston Town Athletic Association, who did not give his name, said the portable building that has been “burnt down to the ground” is beside one of three football pitches and belongs to the association.
Photos appear show a mattress among the debris at the site.
The association is a sports and social club with sections for darts, bowls and pigeon racing and is the home of Leiston Football Club, its Facebook page said.
The portable building is in the corner of a field, away from the nearest road and houses.
It was used for storage before it fell into disrepair and had not been used in months, the man said.
“The windows have been knocked out some time ago due to vandalism,” he said. “It wasn’t used for anything in particular, just for dumping stuff there.”
He said the groundsman called him on Tuesday afternoon about a fire.
He said he had not seen smoke or anybody going into the building, though a darts player mentioned “in general conversation” some time ago that he saw a young adult go into the building.
“It’s obviously very sad news,” he said.
Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday morning, or has knowledge of the incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 246 of 6 February.
