A freak storm swept through Leiston at the end of January, causing thousands of pounds of damage to the roof at the Long Shop Museum - the original site of the Richard Garrett engineering works.

A workshop roof was also damaged by debris whipped up by the storm.

Staff, volunteers, and helpers including Hollesley Bay prisoners working in the community, are vying to complete the repairs before an open day on March 29.

Volunteer Alan Cardy said: “The storm blew sheet glass out of the Long Shop roof.

“There was a lot of broken glass but no damage to the exhibits, although we had issues with water getting in.”

Several other restoration projects are being carried out at the museum, where a free open day will feature Victorian activities from 10am-4pm on Saturday, March 29.
