THE Tories suffered their first reverse in Suffolk since the General Election when the Liberal Democrats gained the Mid Suffolk district council seat of Hoxne in a by-election.

THE Tories suffered their first reverse in Suffolk since the General Election when the Liberal Democrats gained the Mid Suffolk district council seat of Hoxne in a by-election.

Following the death of Conservative councillor Chris Lawrence, Dr Evelyn Adey won the by-election on Thursday with a majority of 13 on a swing of 13.7%.

Labour, which did not fight the seat when Mr Lawrence was elected in 2003, put up a candidate but only polled 54 votes.

Dr Evelyn Adey (LD) 308, Elizabeth Gibson-Harries (Con) 295, Gary Deeks (Lab) 54. Maj 13. LD gain from Con. Swing 13.7% Con to LD. Turnout: 40.3%.

2003 result: Con 463, LD 275. Maj 188.
