A lorry fire near to the Orwell Bridge in Suffolk has caused delays for drivers on the A14.

Suffolk police received reports or a broken down lorry at around 6.20pm this evening.

However, on arrival officers discovered the lorry’s tyre appeared to be on fire.

The lorry had pulled over in the eastbound carriageway, after crossing the Orwell Bridge, but was still blocking one lane.

Officers closed the eastbound carriageway to allow Suffolk Fire and Rescue to tackle the blaze, which was described by witnesses as affecting the lorry’s axle.

“The smoke was going away from the westbound carriageway, so that was able to run OK,” a spokesman added.

Crews had the fire out soon after 7pm and lane two was reopened shortly after.

Police said were still awaiting recovery for the lorry, as of 7.30pm, but by 9.30pm all lanes were reopened.

Traffic is said to be slow moving in the eastbound lane.

The AA traffic website said delays were affecting motorists between Copdock and Bucklesham.
