A lifeboat crew was called out to a yacht which was in distress and drifting into a sandbank.

Lowestoft Lifeboat crew were called into action just after 2pm on Saturday when a 40ft yacht got into difficulties 1.5 miles south east of the town.

According to the team's Twitter account, the yacht - which had two people aboard - was struggling to make headway against the tide and was drifting close to a sandbank.

Lowestoft RNLI Coxswain John Fox said: "We were called at 2.08pm to give assistance to a yacht and our volunteer crew soon launched our lifeboat 'Patsy Knight' and we located the 40 foot vessel about one and a half miles south east of Lowestoft.

"The two people on board the yacht said that were having a problem with their engine and were struggling to make headway against the tide, so called for our assistance."

Mr Fox added: "In very calm conditions and with insufficient wind to sail into the harbour, they were drifting close to a sandbank."

The crew then brought the yacht in safely, using a towline to bring it into port.
