Commuters across the region are facing long delays this evening after a person was struck by a train.

A spokesman from the British Transport Police said officers were called to the line close to Ingatestone railway station at 4.35pm with trains being held between Ingatestone and Shenfield while investigations took place.

They added: “Officers attended alongside paramedics. Sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained. Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the nature of the incident.”

Earlier this evening, a report from Greater Anglia said a trespassing incident had occurred in the Ingatestone area and that trains were being asked to go slowly.

Just after 5pm tonight, a spokesperson told this newspaper: “The 1600 service from Liverpool Street is now being held between Ingatestone and Shenfield and we are unable to run any trains through this area while the emergency services attend to an incident.

They added: “We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused and advise them to apply for compensation via our Delay Repay scheme.”
