Mammoth tyre blaze in controlled burn

FIREFIGHTERS are currently tackling a major blaze at a scrap yard, seven hours after a pile of tyres ignited earlier today.

The crews, across the border in Cambridegshire, were called to the scene near Littleport at around 1pm.

When they arrived they discovered the blaze had taken hold of a pile of tyres measuring 15m by 15m.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire fire service said after consulting the Environment Agency and checking weather reports the decision was taken to let the fire burn “in a controlled manner to avoid contaminating the surround fields.”

He said there was no residential properties in the area and the smoke is being blown over the fields.
