A MAN is in police custody today following a flat fire which left one person in hospital.

The 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson shortly after the outbreak of fire at a flat in Ipswich.

A man living at the flat was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after being rescued by firefighters.

The blaze, which is being treated as suspicious, broke out in the bedroom of a flat in Bell Close.

Two fire crews from Princes Street station and one from Colchester Road headquarters were called at around 3.10am this morning following reports of a fire at the flat.

The fire had started in the ground floor flat of a four storey block of flats.

A man was rescued from the building by firefighters who then requested the assistance of the ambulance service.

Paramedics arrived on scene at around 3.20am and took the man to Ipswich Hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

Meanwhile, fire crews continued to battle the blaze, which was under control by 3.40am.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was due to start this morning.
