A window-fitter swung a punch at a policeman after making a £5 drunken bet with his friends that he could get arrested, a court was told.

Lowestoft magistrates heard that Brett Ives, from Lowestoft, launched an assault on Karl Brown and Clive Sabbage, both aged 20, in an unprovoked attack.

Colette Griffiths, prosecuting, said that Ives had been drinking on a night out at the Claremont Pier in the town on September 13 and was waiting for a taxi home at 2.30am when he started to throw punches at the pair.

When police tried to calm him down, Ives shouted abuse and tried to hit one of the officers, who managed to block the punch.

Police arrested Ives, 24, and

found a Stanley knife on him when he was searched at the police station.

The court was told that that Ives had made the bet with his friends an hour and 20 minutes before the incident.

Defending him, Lucy Ashmore said that Ives had left work

just before going out and had forgotten that he still had the knife on him.

She added that he could not remember what had happened during the night out because

of the amount of alcohol he had drunk.

Ives, of Colville Road, pleaded guilty to three assault charges and to possessing a knife.

He will be sentenced later at crown court.
