THE bomb disposal squad was called after a 43-year-old man was found to be carrying part of an incendiary device on a train.

Officers were called at 1.40pm on Thursday and told that a man on the Lowestoft bound service from London Liverpool Street appeared to be drunk and was verbally abusive to staff.

When the train arrived at Lowestoft station the individual was detained and searched and officers discovered he was carrying what appeared to be part of an incendiary device.

He was taken to the town's police station and the bomb disposal squad was called to make the device safe, a spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said.

He added that the train was searched but nothing else was found and that a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of articles to cause criminal damage and a public order offence.

He remains in custody, the spokesman said.
