Justin Faircloth, 26, of Smallwood Road, Colchester, will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and being in possession of an offensive weapon.
Police in Essex were contacted shortly after 4.30am on Tuesday by the ambulance service following reports of a stabbing in The Square, Colchester, in which a 21-year-old man from the town had sustained multiple stab wounds.
Faircloth was arrested and subsequently charged with one count of GBH with intent and one count of being in possession of an offensive weapon.
Faircloth, a builder, is being detained in police custody prior to his appearance at Chelmsford Magistrates Court tomorrow.
The alleged victim is recovering at home.
