Patrick O'Hara was arrested and questioned by detectives on Saturday following the robbery of an Audi in Princes Street on Friday evening.
The 30-year-old, of no fixed address, was later charged with taking a vehicle without consent, threatening behaviour, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court today.
Police said the vehicle has been recovered.
