A man has appeared in court charged with criminal damage and assault following an incident at an Ipswich church.

David Lewis, 45, of Bramford Lane, Ipswich, was remanded in custody following his appearance at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The charges of criminal damage and assault relate to an incident at St Mary at the Elms on Sun day February 11 where a lectern, candle holders, a statue, pottery and chairs were damaged and an ornament thrown in the direction of a woman inside the church, although it did not hit her.

Lewis was also charged with breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) relating to an incident on Saturday, February 10, where the control room at Suffolk police was contacted regarding a non-emergency matter.

Lewis was remanded in custody until he next appears before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, February 22.
