A 20-year-old man from Great Cornard has been charged with assaulting a woman police officer in a Sudbury nightclub.

Joseph Coffey, of Sycamore Road, is due to appear before Bury Magistrates on March 24.

The police constable is said to have sustained multiple minor injuries including some to her hand and neck.

He was arrested following a series of brawls which broke out at Station Lounge, formerly known as Eastern's, in Station Road, Sudbury around 2.20am yesterday.

Four other males were also detained by police at the nightspot and one man needed treatment at West Suffolk Hospital for a facial injury.

Police cautioned a 20-year-old and a 22-year-old, both from the Sudbury area for assault. Officers also gave out fixed penalty notices for public order offences to two 18-year-old's - one from Long Melford, the other from Great Waldingfield.
