Police said Terrence Wilson, 52, of St Osyth would appear at Colchester Magistrates' Court tomorrow to face the allegations which were allegedly committed against a girl under the age of 13.
He will kept in custody overnight after being charged this afternoon.
The alleged incident happened at about 9.50am yesterday when the child was walking in Rochford Road, St Osyth.

Investigating officers are anxious to trace a middle-aged woman who dropped her glasses in the area of St Clair's Road in St Osyth on Saturday morning.
The woman was helped by a young girl who picked the glasses up, and police want to talk to her as a possible witness.
