A motorist has denied mowing down a pedestrian on a zebra crossing and leaving him lying in the road in Clacton.

Steven Hughes denied five offences connected with the incident in Old Road, Clacton, on September 2, at Colchester Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.

Hughes, 30, denied striking Tyler St George as the victim walked across the zebra crossing at around 1.15pm, before driving off.

The court heard he denied being the driver of the Ford Focus, which left onto St Andrew’s Road.

Sharon Hall, prosecuting, said: “Tyler St George was using a zebra crossing when he was knocked down by a car, a Ford Focus, that we say Mr Hughes was driving.

“That car then stopped, reversed and left the scene at high speed.”

The court heard Mr St George, 22, was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries following the incident.

Hughes, of Meadow Way, Jaywick, denied driving while disqualified, driving without due care and attention, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident, and driving without insurance, during a hearing at Colchester Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday, September 26.

A trial has been set for January 2 at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court. Hughes was granted unconditional bail.
