A MAN will appear in court today charged with rape in connection with an incident in which a 21-year-old woman was snatched from a supermarket car park in Suffolk and subjected to a sex attack.

Robert English, 58, of Fiddlewood Road, Norwich, was arrested on Thursday and questioned by officers at Bury St Edmunds police station.

On Saturday, he was charged with kidnap, false imprisonment and two counts of rape in connection with an incident in Brandon on Saturday, June 14.

Police launched a major appeal for witnesses after the woman was abducted in broad daylight from the town's Tesco car park at knifepoint before being driven to a remote area and raped.

The 21-year-old woman had been called over by a man asking for help with heavy bags, but when she helped him load a holdall into his vehicle she was pushed her inside.

Detectives say she was dumped several hours later in Wimbledon Avenue, Brandon.

English has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court at 10am today.
