A LORRY driver suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a car in Stowmarket.

The male driver was knocked over by a taxi after stepping out of his lorry at the roadside to ask for directions.

The collision happened at around 7am this morning, outside Bosch Lawn and Garden Ltd, in Gipping Way.

The man was taken by ambulance for treatment at The West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds.

Police closed the A1308 to drivers and diversions were put in place, taking traffic through Combs Ford.

That caused serious problems for drivers heading into the centre of Stowmarket during the morning rush-hour.

Pc Andy Fossey, of the Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “The man is seriously injured and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

“Gipping Way will be closed for some time while we investigate and carry out a survey of the road to try and piece together what happened.”

The road re-opened in mid-morning.

The driver of the taxi was not hurt and was due to be questioned by police to determine how the collision happened.

Police are asking anyone who saw the vehicle prior to the collision or the collision itself to call the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Police Headquarters on 01473 613500.
