A MAN fractured his eye socket, cheek and wrist after being assaulted and then thrown into a river.

The 34-year-old had been cycling in Central Park, Chelmsford, when he met up with a group of people. Police were called to the park after reports that a man was in the water and found the victim had got out of the river but was cold and injured.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for treatment to his injuries which as well as the fractures included cuts and bruises to his head and face.

He had gone into the park in the late afternoon on Thursday and was joined by other people in the early evening.

Police were called to the alleged attack at about 10.20pm.

Officers are examining CCTV footage and have seized a number of items for forensic analysis.

A 41-year-old Chelmsford man was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail without charge until August 20 pending further enquiries.
