A Suffolk man who posted revenge porn on a woman’s Facebook page has been jailed for eight weeks in what is believed to be one of the first prosecutions of its kind in the county.

Darren Byng, 42, uploaded three sexually explicit pictures of the woman in a bath on her Facebook wall, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The woman, who he met in Ipswich, discovered the photographs on her Facebook page after being contacted by a relative and described feeling “embarrassed, traumatised and physically sick” when she saw what Byng had done

Jailing Byng, who was living in Saxmundham, Judge Martyn Levett described the pictures as “sexually graphic” and said the case was one of the first of its kind to come before a court in Suffolk.

“They were of such a degree that anyone having to endure the embarrassment of seeing themselves in that sexually compromised position would feel trauma and physically sick,” said the judge.

He said the victim’s Facebook login details had already been on Byng’s computer and he had used them to upload the pictures on her Facebook wall. “She never expected them to be published and hadn’t given her consent,” said Judge Levett.

He said the images could potentially have been seen by millions of people.

“They were the most personal and intimate images and it was done to humiliate her and it probably did.

“I regard what you did as a gross breach of trust,” he added.

Byng, of London Road South, Lowestoft admitted disclosing sexual photographs of a woman with intent to cause her distress.

In addition to being jailed Byng was made the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting the woman for two years. He was also ordered to pay a £900 criminal courts’ charge and an £80 victim surcharge. The court heard that the maximum penalty for the offence was two years imprisonment.

Matthew Sorel-Cameron for Byng said his client had given the woman a lot of support and had been upset when she “dropped him like a stone.”

Mr Sorel-Cameron said Byng, who suffered from depression, had posted the images on Facebook in a moment of madness after he had been drinking.

He had later tried to remove the images but found the Facebook page had been closed.
