POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault in north Essex that has left a man fighting for his life in hospital with severe head injuries.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault in north Essex that has left a man fighting for his life in hospital with severe head injuries.

The incident happened at around 10pm on Tuesday near to entrance of the car park of the Royal Albion pub in The Parade, Walton-on-the-Naze, where the victim had been drinking.

The injured 48-year-old man, who lives in the area, was taken to Colchester General Hospital by the ambulance service.

At first his condition was not considered serious but it rapidly deteriorated, and he was later transferred to Queens' Hospital in Romford where he remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Anybody who saw the assault or who has any information that might be relevant to the investigation is asked to contact CID at Clacton Police Station on 01255 254031.

* A 28-year-old local bricklayer has been arrested in connection with the assault and is being questioned by detectives.
