Armed officers attended Knights Way in Dunmow at around 10pm yesterday following reports of a man carrying two firearms.
The man was shot by armed officers and he suffered leg injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he currently remains.
The 48-year-old man from Dunmow was arrested in relation to firearms offences.
Two suspected firearms have been recovered from the scene by officers.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission which has launched an investigation
