Jamie Scoulding, 22, of Hyperion Court, Ipswich, was due to appear before magistrates today after he was charged in the early hours of this morning.
He was remanded in custody until his appearance at the South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court.
Police launched a major investigation yesterday morning after a 21-year-old woman was found naked in St Nicholas Street, believed to have been a victim of a serious assault.
The incident occurred between 12.20am and 2am. A man was arrested in connection with the incident just after 4am.
The area was sectioned off as a precaution while officers carry out their investigations.
