Weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms are in place for most of the Suffolk and north Essex region today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, lasting 6am-8pm, for much of eastern and northern England, which could bring flooding and disruption to services.

“Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving condition and some road closures,” the warning states.

“There is a small chance that either flooding or lightning strikes could lead to power cuts or loss of other services to some homes and businesses.”

The Met Office has issued several weather warnings in recent in recent weeks. While parts of the region experienced frequent lightning strikes last weekend, many other areas escaped relatively unscathed.

The latest warning is on the lower end of the Met Office’s probability scale. However, areas that do experience storms are warned that the effects could be severe.

“Many parts will be wet and cloudy but only a few seem likely to see the heaviest downpours,” the warning added.

“At present it is East Anglia that looks perhaps most likely to see hourly totals in excess of 20mm, with a few spots perhaps seeing 40-60mm in 2-3 hours.”

Norwich-based Weatherquest said a band of heavy slow-moving showers from west Norfolk to southeast Suffolk “will bring persistent rain through much of the day and the risk of localised flooding in spots”.

Elsewhere, Weatherquest said it would be drier with showers or perhaps a thunderstorm later. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 22C.

Forecasts for tomorrow a mostly fine and dry day, with sunny spells will be best for southern and western areas.
