A weather warning for thunderstorms has been extended for much of Suffolk and Essex into this afternoon - with risk of flooding, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.

The Met Office had said previously its yellow warning for thunderstorms would end early this morning - however a new band of storms is now expected to cause disruption to some parts of the region between 1-8pm.

Weatherquest confirmed that up to 3,000 lightening strikes had hit the region in three hours during the peak of yesterday’s storms.

The strikes saw the roof of a house in Stanway, near Colchester, completely destroyed and services from Stansted Airport disrupted.

While the earlier storms mainly affected Essex and south west Suffolk – the latest warning also affects the east of the region.

A Met Office spokesman said: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

Weatherquest said that despite the risk of a heavy shower or thunderstorm later this afternoon, much of East Anglia would see a “mainly sunny day” with maximum temperatures of 27C
