West Suffolk students have teamed up with their German counterparts for a unique project commemorating the First World War.

Mildenhall College Academy joined forces with the Gymnasium Theodorianum School in Germany to design and build a memorial marking the 1914 Christmas truce.

The monument now sits at the Peace Village of Mesen, near Ypres, and is believed to be the first such commemorative project ever attempted by two European schools.

Richard Kerridge, humanities faculty leader at Mildenhall College Academy, said: “We wanted to use the past as a way of bringing young people of different nationalities together to honour the conflict.

“This one-of-a-kind project has given our combined pupils a fantastic opportunity to partake in an international collaboration and make an historic contribution to the First World War 100 year anniversary.”
