THE search through tons of rubbish in the hunt for a missing Suffolk baby is likely to continue over the weekend.

Police officers were joined by waste disposal workers in the search for the body of a missing baby from Lowestoft at the Feltwell landfill site near Thetford in Norfolk.

A Suffolk police spokeswoman said: "It is a very difficult search but officers will continue for as long as it takes. Plans are in place for the search to continue over the weekend."

The landfill site is operated by the Waste Recycling Group.

A company spokesman said the site is used by a number of local authorities in East Anglia including Waveney District Council which operate in the Lowestoft and north Suffolk area.

"The landfill site has been temporarily closed to enable the search to take place. It is possible to identify what part of the site waste from the Lowestoft area will have been placed but it is still quite a large area to cover."

Suffolk police launched an investigation into the alleged death of a baby several days ago and have carried out extensive searches in the Lowestoft area.

Earlier in the week the search switched to the Feltwell landfill site and officers in chemical suits and gas masks have been making a meticulous search of the waste.

The site receives about 1,000 tons of rubbish a day and the area where police are concentrating their search is about 30m x 20m and 3m deep.

The packed down waste is first lifted by a digger and then searched through.

Waste Recycling Group keeps a record of where daily deposits are made and officers are convinced they are looking in the right area.
