MORE than 1,000 homes were left without electricity in north Suffolk after a fault in the overhead power network.

MORE than 1,000 homes were left without electricity in north Suffolk after a fault in the overhead power network.

A spokesman for provider EDF said 1,854 customers in the Leiston area were without electricity at 10.20am.

EDF Energy Networks engineers managed to restore supplies to nearly 700 customers by 12.16pm and considerable work has continued throughout the afternoon to reconnect the remaining supplies as swiftly and safely as possible, he added.

Supplies to all but 147 customers were restored by 8.30pm.

The spokesman said work would continue throughout the night to get homes back on line as soon as possible.

“Due to the rural location of this fault our engineers have needed to inspect equipment at a number of different locations before being able to safely reconnect the supplies in stages,” he said. “We do understand the inconvenience this interruption to supply has caused and apologise to everyone who has been affected.”
