THE Government is to announce today that hundreds more troops will be sent to Afghanistan.

In a statement to the House of Commons this afternoon Defence Secretary Des Browne is expected to confirm the deployment of some 230 personnel.

It will bring the total number of UK troops in the troubled country to more than 8,000. Most are based in the volatile Helmand province.

The news comes as the death toll of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan hit 102 last week after the deaths of five soldiers from the Colchester-based Parachute Regiment.
