A FAMILY has been devastated after a woman was killed in a car crash that has also left her partner and six-month old baby seriously injured in hospital.

The 38-year-old woman passenger was certified dead at the scene of the tragic accident, which happened in the early hours of yesterday.

She had been travelling with her partner and their six-month old baby in a black Chrysler PT Cruiser along the B1027 Brightlingsea Road, near its junction with Elmstead Road north of Wivenhoe, when it was in a collision with a green Renault 19 at around 12.15am yesterday .

Emergency crews from Colchester fire station and ambulances from Frinton, Harwich and Weeley rushed to the scene after reports one person was trapped and one of the cars had overturned.

Firefighters and ambulance crews - as well as an off-duty paramedic and doctor, who stopped at the accident - helped to free and care for the man and child, but the woman was pronounced dead.

The man and baby were taken to Colchester General Hospital with serious head injuries and were detained.

The driver of the Renault, a 19-year-old from Frating, was also taken to hospital with serious back and neck injuries.

The 38-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was from Cobham, Surrey. A police spokesman said they had been staying at their mobile home in Bentley Country Park before returning to Surrey in the early hours.
