John McFarlane appeared in the dock at Bury St Edmunds Magsitrates' Court only to confirm his name, age and address before his case was transferred to Ipswich Crown Court.
He is accused of murdering 38-year-old Mary Griffiths, who was found seriously injured at her home in Bullrush Crescent, Bury, on May 6. She later died at West Suffolk Hospital.
McFarlane, who was arrested by police this morning at a psychiatric unit in Norfolk, was released on conditional bail until Tuesday when he will appear at the crown court for a preliminary case hearing.
The public gallery at the Bury court house was this morning packed with family and friends of Ms Griffiths.
