The 40-year-old was arrested after mother-of-three Mary Griffiths was found dying of a severe chest injury in Bull Rush Crescent, Bury St Edmunds in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
She died at West Suffolk Hospital, where the arrested man is being treated.
In the wake of her death police endeavoured to track down her next of kin, who are understood to live in Ireland.
Family members were in Bury yesterday to formally identify Ms Griffiths' body and meet with her devastated close friends.
Today the family released a photograph of Ms Griffiths who was a fitness instructor in Bury and Newmarket.
