A partnership between two organisations which support people with mental health issues has been awarded funding to launch music appreciation groups in Bury St Edmunds.
The Restoration Trust, which provides culture therapy for people with mental health conditions, and charity Julian Support, based in Bury, received the funding from the National Lottery and Forest Heath District Council’s community chest.
The weekly groups will be run at the Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds.
In July 2017, a compilation album by Bury St Edmunds bands called ‘This is the Sound of Sugar Town, Volume 2’ was released on vinyl and by digital download.
It featured 13 acts and all profits were donated to Julian Support, and this paid for three taster music appreciation sessions at the Hunter Club for people supported by the mental health charity.
The success of the taster sessions then led to applications for funding being made with the aim of running the group on a regular basis.
The group is a place for people with complex mental health needs to share their interest and enjoyment of music by listening to their choices in the company of others.
The Restoration Trust has been running a similar group at the Norwich Arts Centre, facilitated by musician and mental health professional Dave Pullin.
The group has a website where people can find out more and see the diversity of music chosen in more than two years worth of playlists.
