A public meeting has been called to address concerns over the effect developing a town’s primary school could have on the community.

Needham Market Town Council said the meeting was needed to air residents’ concerns about the proposed expansion of Bosmere Primary School.

Proposals to build two new classrooms at the school in Quinton Road are needed to cope with extra students coming from the town’s middle school, which is set to close in 2015.

The town council also has fears there will not be enough capacity at the school to deal with children coming from new housing developments. Town clerk, Kevin Hunter, said Suffolk County Council’s consultation over the plans had not been good enough.

“Although we were invited to the drop-in session it was not really managed well at all and it was not meaningful for the town council or for the people who went there to express their views,” he said.

“When the planning application came through it really did not reflect the issues that were raised - it makes you worried that the message is not getting through.”

He said the application was an opportunity to address the issue of queuing traffic in Quinton Road which can build up at the start and end of the school day. The town council wants a school drop-off point created.

The county council said its timetable to complete the works was still on track despite the original proposals being withdrawn.

A Suffolk County Council spokeswoman said: “The original planning application was withdrawn as a result of inaccurate information given to us relating to the location of drainage utilities. Instead of working around what was believed to be a sewer pipe and after commissioning a full drainage survey it transpired that it was a main Anglian Water pipe.”

No comment was made on the town council’s points.

The meeting will be in Needham Market Community Centre on November 23, at 7.30pm.
