Work to replace a double roundabout in Bury St Edmunds has been completed ahead of schedule.

The Cullum Road/Parkway double roundabout has been replaced with a single roundabout and Suffolk County Council initially scheduled works to finish on September 8.

But at the start of the month, the council said that date was likely to be brought forward a week.

The temporary traffic lights have now been removed and the single roundabout opened for vehicles today.

Suffolk highways began the project on June 5, and good on site progress meant it was able to be completed ahead of schedule.

The project to remove the double roundabout is the first phase of a £2.8million scheme to improve traffic flow and encourage walking and cycling in the town centre.

The second phase of the work – at the Spread Eagle junction – is scheduled to start on Monday, September 4.
