Eight crews of firefighters were called out to a block of flats last night after fireworks were deliberately let off inside the building.

Automatic fire alarms were triggered after the fireworks were let off in communal areas of the flats in Exning Road, Newmarket at around 8.45pm last night.

Appliances from Newmarket, Mildenhall, Wickhambrook, Burwell and Soham, as well as a turntable ladder from Cambridge, a water carrier from Newmarket and a command unit from Ixworth all attended the incident, as did the police due to the nature of the call.

Emergency services had left the scene by 10.20pm.
