POLICE are today urging people to be on their guard after an elderly person fell victim to distraction burglars in Newmarket.

Thieves targeted the home in Rowley Court yesterday at some point between 11.30am and noon.

The elderly victim answered the door to two men claiming they had come to fix the boiler.

A Suffolk police spokesman said a ladies pirse was stolen from inside.

He issued a series of tips to help people stay safe in their homes:

- Householders should be wary of anyone turning up on their doorstep unannounced, especially if they cannot provide credible identity documents

- Utility workers usually make an appointment and do not operate by trying to gain access to your home

- Members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should remain vigilant

- Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are

He added: “Please report anything suspicious as soon as possible.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of it should contact DC Craig Brett at Bury St Edmunds CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55511.
