A property in Newmarket has been boarded up today, after suspicions that it was being used for drug dealing.

Acting on intelligence from members of the public police carried out an investigation around the property in George Lambton Avenue and this week applied for a Closure Order at West Suffolk Magistrates Court.

Officers, supported by representatives from Flagship Housing Association and Forest Heath District Council, attended the property today and boarded up the premises, as the order was granted.

It has the effect of closing the premises to anyone for up to three months, and it is an offence for any person to remain on or enter the premises.

Local Policing Commander Inspector Matthew Rose said: “Police in Forest Heath work hard with partners and the community to tackle drug use and the anti-social behaviour.

“On this occasion Newmarket Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Operational Partnership Team have been working alongside Flagship Housing Association and Forest Heath District Council to listen to the concerns of local residents, and use our powers to the fullest.

“Although we will continue to support vulnerable people, our action today sends a clear message to illegal drug dealers who disrupt our community – that your behaviour will not be tolerated and you risk losing your home.

“The local authority is under no obligation to re-home anyone made homeless as a result of a Closure Order.”

Police are appealing to members of the public to report any suspicious activity on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
